Taking care of Yourself
Can we be safe to be wild?
Tantra workshops, by their very nature, are risky. Participants are intending to explore areas that have often been repressed, such as sexuality, body-image, intimacy and relating. There are many potential traumas in these areas, and frequently they are not known about prior to starting the healing work. On an energy level, Tantra practices liberate energy that has been blocked and repressed, and this can feel intense.
However, this doesn't mean "anything goes". On the contrary, it means that facilitators and therapists need to be even more aware of their participants' experiences, good with boundaries and preferably trauma-informed. Most Tantra schools do not permit their teachers to have romantic or sexual interactions with their participants (often also with a set time period of no interaction following a workshop). However, there are schools and teachers who do not follow this, and so it is wise for participants to do good research prior to joining a workshop. Anyone who has a known history of sexual trauma would be advised not to join a workshop without these boundaries set in place, as they are putting themselves at risk. What can you do to stay safe?

Red Flags in Workshops
This free document was created by Wilrieke Sophia and Rupert James Alison to assist participants in navigating workshops in a safer way, and also to educate facilitators in how they can create safer spaces. It uses a system of flags: red, orange, yellow and green, which show how to predict the safety of spaces before you enter them.
